The Umhlatuzana River Bridge project was an emergency rehabilitation project delivered for eThekwini Municipality following the collapse of a section of the existing bridge. Icon Construction was responsible for the careful demolition and reconstruction of the damaged portion of the cast in-situ post-tensioned bridge, while protecting the remaining structure and surrounding infrastructure.
The works included controlled demolition, structural reconstruction, bridge deck reinstatement, embankment protection, roadworks, and environmental management within a live river setting. The project required careful temporary support, precise connection to the existing bridge, and close coordination throughout construction.
The project received several industry awards and recognitions, including the Fulton Award for Infrastructure. It stands as a strong example of Icon Construction’s ability to deliver complex rehabilitation work safely, efficiently, and to an exceptional standard.
