The Richmond Bulk Water Supply Scheme was delivered for uMngeni uThukela Water, formerly uMngeni Water, to strengthen bulk water supply infrastructure between the existing network, Richmond reservoirs, and the Thornville branch line. The project involved the construction of a long steel pipeline route across varied rural and urban settings.
The works included pipeline laying and welding, road and rail crossings, pipe jacking, valve and flow meter chambers, cathodic protection, tie-ins, pressure testing, disinfection, commissioning, and rehabilitation of the pipeline servitude. Construction required careful management through farmland, river crossings, natural grasslands, and the streets of Richmond.
The completed pipeline improved regional bulk water transfer capacity and reflects Icon Construction’s ability to deliver extensive steel pipeline projects across diverse terrain and service conditions.
