The Northern Aqueduct Augmentation Phase 5 was delivered for eThekwini Municipality as a major bulk water transfer upgrade in Durban. The project involved the construction of a large-diameter steel pipeline from Durban Heights to the Duffs Road area, strengthening the city’s northern bulk water supply network.
The works included bulk pipeline installation, valve chambers, live tie-ins, road and service crossings, pavement reinstatement, and a significant river crossing where the pipeline was carried over the uMgeni River on a dedicated reinforced concrete bridge. Construction required careful planning around traffic, existing services, environmental constraints, and live water infrastructure.
The completed project provides a resilient bulk water transfer route and demonstrates Icon Construction’s ability to deliver complex pipeline infrastructure in demanding urban and river environments.
