The Mahatma Gandhi Road Trunk Sewer Phase 1 project was delivered for eThekwini Municipality Water and Sanitation Unit in Durban. The project involved replacing an existing trunk sewer with a new gravity sewer pipeline along a busy section of Mahatma Gandhi Road.
Construction was carried out below road level within a constrained public road environment, requiring careful trenching, shoring, traffic accommodation, pedestrian management, and protection of surrounding services. Several existing services had to be temporarily relocated or bridged to allow the deep excavation works to proceed safely and efficiently.
The completed sewer upgrade improved the reliability of critical wastewater infrastructure in the Point precinct and reflects Icon Construction’s capability in delivering complex underground services work in high-activity urban areas, including waterlogged ground conditions.
