The Mahatma Gandhi Road DN800 Steel Watermain project was delivered for eThekwini Municipality as part of the broader upgrade to the Point Waterfront Development in Durban. The project strengthened bulk water supply infrastructure to support increased demand in a busy urban precinct.
The works involved the installation of a new steel watermain, associated valve chambers, tie-ins to existing infrastructure, temporary water connections, and reinstatement of roads, sidewalks, and public realm areas affected by the works. A major feature of the project was the deep excavation required through the city centre, where dewatering, shoring, traffic accommodation, and a dense network of underground services had to be carefully managed throughout construction.
The completed project improved the resilience of the area’s water supply network and demonstrates Icon Construction’s ability to deliver deep excavation and pipeline works safely within constrained urban environments.
